Meet the Mumbaikar Maas' of Bollywood.

Mumbai has given a wide array of Maas’ to Indian Film Industry. This wide array of Bollywood Moms features Desi Moms, Sacrificing Moms, Loving Moms & Villain Moms. Yes, the Moms have played a very vital range of characters and have successfully coped up with the ever changing Bollywood trends. I have made a small research analyses on these Maas’ of Bollywood. Here are some findings and details. :P Hope you will like it.. :-)

The 1st and foremost Maa that came to my mind is Nirupa Roy. She was born on January 4, 1931 in Gujrat. She got married & moved to Mumbai when she was just 15. She has a big span of 50 years of Bollywood life. She has about 250 films to her credits of which she has majority acts of a Mother. She was referred as a Suffering Indian Mom who often lost her kids in her films. She has played a couple of Blind Mother roles too. She also lost her husbands in many of her films :P hehehhee..

She touched the skies of Bollywood when she gave a super block buster Deewar. In this movie, she has been mother to the brothers Amitab Bacchan & Shashi Kapoor. Amitab’s act was of a criminal mumma boy ;-) Whereas, Shashi Kapoor played a role of a strict Police Officer. The movie Deewar, took Bollywood to a new height which minted unbeatable fortune & fame. Since then, Nirupa Roy has been a mother to Amitab Bacchan in many more films like Amar Akbar Anthony, Suhaag, Lal Badshah, Mukkadar ka Sikandar etc.

“Mere paas Maa hai” has been very popular dialogue since Deewar and during those days, referring “Maa” in any talks, automatically referred to Nirupa Roy. (I just sms’d one of my friend that I’m writing about Maas’ of Bollywood and the reply I got was “Nirupa Roy”. Hahahaha)

Nirupa Roy has many awards to her credits. In 1961, she was awarded BFJA Best Actress in Supporting Role for her movie Chhaya. She was awarded Filmfare Lifetime Achievement in 2003. She won the title “Best Supporting Role” in 3-4 movies.

She expired to a cardiac arrest in Mumbai on 13th October, 2004 at the age of 73. Hats off to this Mumbaikar for taking India Cinema to new heights. :-) :-)

Lets move on to the next Bollywood Mom now.

Nargis Dutt: The Mother India.

The movie Mother India opened the doors of Mumbai to Nargis. Various internal scenes for the film Mother India were shot at Mehboob Studios in Bandra - Bombay in the year 1956. Due to some accidents, the movie sets caught fire and Sunil Dutt saved her life which in turn sparked up love between them which finally led to marriage with a year and so she shifted to Mumbai in the year 1958.

Nargis Dutt was born and brought up in Culcutta (Kolkata). She has many movies to her credit which have won various awards. But Mother India was on the top of the lists. She portrays the character of a Mother & Mother India. This movie was nominated for Oscars too. She also won the Best Actress Award for this film. The movie plot was something like this. She had to repay loans raised by her Mother in law for her marriage. She worked in fields (Farmville types ;-P). But, as luck would have it, her fields were hit by floods. She lost all the crops and now she had no ways to repay the loans.

She decided to continue staying there and bring up the fields again. She was abused by many villagers. Single handedly, she brought up her kids in spite of many hardships & poverty. But again, as luck would have it, one of her son chose bad path of life which led his mother Nargis to kill him. This blockbuster earned big revenues commercially and since then, all the Nargis films were commercially successful.

Nargis suffered Pancreatic Cancer which cost her life. She was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital where she breathed her last on 3rd of May, 1981.
Here are few other awards to her credit.
1.
 1. 1957 - Filmfare Best Actress Award, Mother India.
  2.   1958 - Best Actress at Karlovy Vary International Film Festival,     Mother India.
3.   1958 - Padma Shri - first film actress to be conferred the award.

Lets move on to the next Bolly Mom.

Kirron Kher. – The New Age Maa.

Kirron Kher was born and brought up in Mumbai. She made her debut in Punjabi Films in the year 1983. Kirron Kher has portrayed a New Age Maa character in many super hit blockbusters like Devdas, Mein Hoon Naa, Rang De Basanti, Singh is Kingg, Dostana, and the super hit Om Shanti Om in which she was mother to Shahrukh Khan. Her roles have featured a friendly relation between son and mom. Usually in her films, her son portrays a kind of cool attitude like in Main Hoon Naa, Om Shanti Om, Dostana & Rang De Basanti. Her unique acting has brought her many awards in Supporting Role category. Veer Zarra and Kabhi Alvida Na Kehena have been other super hits from her.

Adding to the uniqueness of this New Age Mom, she has great liking towards Saree and Jewellery collection. She wears her own sarees and jewels in her movies. Her typical acting as the mother in various films shows that her roles cannot be substituted or justified by any other actor in the Indian Film Industry. Kirron Kher & her husband Anupam Kher now own a Production House.

Reema Lagoo made her debut in the Film Industry through Marathi Films. She has a wide experience of four decades in Marathi Film Industry. However, she made her way to Bollywood through Rajshri films Banner. She has been mother to various actors in Rajshri films. After Maine Pyar Kiya, Reema Lagoo has practically acted in almost all the films directed under Rajshri banner. Her typical acting of a middle class mother has easily made her one of the best, emotional, sentimental Bolly Mom.

Out of her all films, she has shown versatile acting in the movie Vaastav. In this movie, she portrays the mother character of the Don of Mumbai City – Sanjay Dutt.
