The Spirit of Mumbai - First Encounter

This article is written by Nivedita. She is the Co-Author at this blog. She can be reached at http://heregoeznothing.blogspot.com/

I completed 5 years of living in this city last month. I've thought about writing something about this place so many times but was just short of words.  Its really difficult to sum up everything about this city. Here is a little bit of something...

Why do they call it the city of dreams? Because decades ago this was the city people came to looking for jobs to provide for their families, start a business or become a part of the great Bollywood in some way or another.  There are so many things on this city about this city that you just won't forget the Nariman Point / Marine Drive is first to flash in my mind.  Whatever you might have read about it - none of it is overrated.  Below is a picture I had clicked when i had been there for the first time.  Don't what it is but I like it. These are marking they made along the pavement.

The Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus is a close close second... Nah, i think it would have to be a tie.  Looking at this station gives me the 'I'm in Mumbai' feeling and I love it!  If you notice, this is such a classic picture.  There is a hand drawn cart and a sedan on the road, everyone's invited :) You must visit this place when in Mumbai.

There is a lot said about the Spirit of Mumbai and how life never stops.  It's not that people don't care about each other (it may feel like they don't many times) but when its the need of the hour every one comes together - That's the spirit of Mumbai.  If you are lost you will always get help.  The first time I experienced this was on 11 July 2006 (it had been 2 months since I first arrived).  The first time I felt so close to a terrorist attack.  In about 11 minutes series of seven bomb blasts had taken place in the Western line of the Mumbai local.

It was past 6 in the evening and I was returning home from work.  As I entered the station a train halted at the platform.  It was platform number 2 which meant I would have to cross the bridge to get it in time.  So I ran making way through the public thinking how slow the oncoming crowd was moving and hoping I am able to board the train.  Just as I made it to the platform train was already in motion and I thought to myself 'Damn, just missed it!'  The next train arrived in about 10 minutes I was able to get in and it was jam packed I couldn't wait to get off.  The train was somewhere midway between the next station and the one I boarded when it stopped.

Now trains sometimes stop for crossing and we thought it was normal.  It was more than 10 minutes and  it had still not moved.  A couple girls in the compartment received calls that there had been blasts and their relatives were calling to check if they were fine.  No one believed it could be true, we were still waiting for the train to move but nothing happened.  It was more than 15 minutes and we were still stranded when we saw people walking on the tracks they were returning from the opposite direction.  I was standing near the door and did not understand what was happening.  They did not have any expression on their faces.  Seeing the oncoming hoard of public, people in the trains started to disembark. Since there was no platform we had to jump off on to the ground.  We had no idea what was happening we were just following the crowd aimlessly. There were people getting calls about some blasts but it felt like a rumor.  We walked towards the road and tried hailing auto-rickshaws none of them were agreeing to go the direction we were asking about, it seemed weird.  After walking for about 35 minutes we reached somewhere near the next station where we hoped to get a taxi.

There were hoards of people and seemed like chaos on the streets.  I was scared and very much worried as I was far away from home and had absolutely no idea about the roads in this city.  I had recently gotten comfortable with the train schedule and now here I was stuck in the middle of nowhere.  There were ambulances zooming past us and I thought may be it was true after all.  The bomb blast had actually happened and it was so close, the train I had just missed was at that station where the incident happened. It was spine chilling to imagine anything more. Walking a little further we saw a group of men asking people where they were headed.  They were making some richskaws and taxis stop and getting them to drop people to where they wanted to go.  One person had stopped a rickshaw and was shouting out the name of the station I wanted to go to.  I rushed there and he helped me get in. The rickshaws usually carry 3 passengers but that day we were 5 of us we all somehow managed it and the we started to taxi.  It was only then that I felt a little hopeful of reaching  back to my place.  I tried calling home and letting them know what was happening but the network was not available.

There was lots of traffic on the road and we were moving very very slowly.  There were people on the street directing the vehicles and trying to streamline the traffic and making way for the ambulances.  This is when I first thought - is this the spirit of Mumbai?  People for people - They were helping out each other.  I didn't know the person who helped me or those who I shared the ride with but we were all in the same boat and we were all supportive of each other.  I remember saying to the lady next to me after hopelessly trying to call home if I could use her phone to call home.  She agreed but only to realised she also had the same problem.  In fact all networks were down that day even the landlines were not working.  The government's idea of shutting down network to avoid panic actually caused more panic - people were worried about their kin who had not reached home.

Generally it would take me about 30 minutes to get home but that day it took me three and a half hours to get back.  The rickshaw driver turned out to be a very honest man, despite knowing the situation and place when he could demand more money than usual.  He just stuck to his standard meter fare!  When I got to my rented accommodation, the flat owners were watching the news of the seven train blasts that happened that day.  I just stood there for a while listening to the tragedy that had befallen this city.  I was grateful to God for keeping me intact and reaching me home without a scratch, that night I really prayed and thanked God.

This is Mumbai where people stand up for each other and you will never feel you are among strangers.  That day through that ordeal I felt like I was a part of this city - another Mumbaikar.

365 days ago.. Jab They Met !!

hmmmmmmm... so its been a year now since i started writing on this blog :-) Its been a year since you are reading my crude, raw & improper write ups. :P I started with sharing 2-3 email fwds and then a few real stories. =)

Gradually i developed a bit of skills of writing something of my own. I started sharing my views on current topics & on goings. Lately, since last 5 months, my writings have been able to drive a good traffic to my blog :) This means i’m improving ;-) :P

Now, when i look back at the year that passed off so slowly.. umm no no it passed off very fast.. arey nahi.. it passed really very slow :P LOL m still confused.. Things have really changed since a year. When i look back, (usually i dont :P ) i find that almost everything has changed to the greatest extent. So i learned that waqt ke saath sab kuch badalta hai.. :P :) People too change like seasons. :P (including me :P) And why not...? The change is for good and i believe that joh bhi hota hai.. ache ke liye hota hai :D

Its not only the 1st bday of my blog, but its also 1st bday of the addiction that i developed towards Mumbai !!! I started writing something of my own after i returned from Mumbai 1 year ago. Those were the BIG BIG BIG 10 days of my life which passed away like 10 mins :P yeah... I don’t know how it happened but this showcases the fact that life in Mumbai is too too fast.

For me, 2 + 2 is never 4. I don’t believe even the simplest things until i justify myself with the proper reasoning. Likewise, i never believed that the life in Mumbai has some different meaning. But i was very eager to know about it in detail and i was waiting to experience it closely. Finally, after spending 10 BIG days in Mumbai, i got addicted towards Mumbai insanely...! :D

There are many reasons why i got addicted to this place. I keenly observed everything i saw in those 10 days. Boleto full on audit chalu tha :P I observed even the smallest thing like the Shoe polish walas at VT & Dadar to the biggest thing like happenings on Nariman Point. :) Finally i realized that the so called EVERYTHING what i observed was just a sip of water in the biggest sea :) yeah... Mumbai has endless things to observe. I feel really proud when i receive compliments from the people who say that i have a gr8 amount of knowledge of this super awesome city. =)

Its been a year since i developed my addiction towards the Mumbai life, Mumbai Local, towards the Marathi Language, the MUSIC of running Trains, the announcements at the stations, the announcements inside the fast locals, the addiction towards my friends :D, the gr8 Dadar sabzi mandi :P, the Churchgate Station. Addiction towards the crowd on the station at peak hours, the vehicle traffic on the city roads, and finally the greatest addiction towards the Nariman Point.

I have been able to express Nariman Point in such a way that few of my friends who reside outside India get a complete picture of what Narman Point really looks like :D Here is a comment from one of my friend Tara who lives in US :) She commented this on one of my pic which was clicked at Nariman Point. :) She has never been to Nariman Point ever in her life but still she said this... :-)

I didn't have to look twice to know it was Nariman Point. You've described it so beautifully I knew where it was in an instant. It is the place your heart lives, where your soul feels free, and where you desire above all else to be! Your picture, to me, is a picture of pure happiness because I know that no matter what is going on in life, for at least one brief moment, a soul is singing in happiness basking in the beauty of the world in which we all live.

My addiction led me to design Nariman Point on my farmville which many of my friends liked. :) Trust me, i designed it within 6 hours :) :P

I have seen all forms of Mumbai. From the eyes of a slum dweller, from the eyes of a business tycoon, from the eyes of a stock broker, from the eyes of a collage student and even from the eyes of a celebrity :P This has made me...... BAS BAS BAS.. :P
Ab bas.. I can keep writing about Mumbai for days.... so ts better we get back to my blog :P LOL !!

The most popular write ups according to the maximum hits or most visited posts on my blog are...

The Truth of Ramlila Protests !

The write up "The Truth of Ramlila Protests" got an awesome response from all over. 80 people shared this write up on FB on the very 1st day. =)

Other than these write ups, few of my blogs have been featured on Mumbai Mirror Online blog. :-) One of my article The Rescue of Karnit Shah - Mumbai Police Zindabad had been featured in DNA - a prominent dailies on page 6 of the issue dated 26th April, 2011. :P All this added to my inspiration for writing better. :)

Some of my Blog Stats: My blog is about to complete 10000 page views. Not a good amount of page views but okie.. i have been still able to enlighten many people with my Farzi Gyan :P LOL ! Lately, my blog has been receiving 200 hits per day =) My blog has gr8 exposure to fb and lots of my friends and other readers have been sharing my write ups on their FB wall. =) The blog about Jhunjhunwala received about 800 hits in a single day ! Thats it..!

Its been a year i dropped my CA studies. Its been a year since i developed “Sab Chalta Hai" attitude. Its been a year i stopped playing farmville :P. Its been a year lot of my dreams vanished and its been a year i saw new dreams !! :) Life goes on.. you see. Life has its own funny way to take away everything from you and give back what you deserve and at the right time :)

Its better that we don’t know what will happen in future. Life should remain a mystery :) It makes living worth. It would be an easy life if you know whats gonna happen.. but then, life would be less magical :)

Thats enough of lecture now.. :) concluding herewith :) have awesome life people..
And haan.. don’t forget to wish my blog Happy Birthday :)

Its only and only because of you readers that i have been writing my blog. Few of the comments have really inspired me alot. I promise to bring more interesting write ups and alot of Rib tickling Humor on my blog in the days to come. So thats all about 365 days ago.. Jab me and my blog met. :P and so the title "Jab They Met" ;-)

And sorry again for any typos or grammatical mistakes.. like always, i have not checked for the spelling mistakes or grammatical errors ;-)

Good Day Good People ! :D Chalo chalo... wish my blog & my addictions a Happy Bday ;-) :D

3 laakh ka Nariman Point !!

Hello Readers,

As the name & the pics suggests, I’m writing about my most favorite place on the earth. The place which I believe is mine :P The iconic beauty of Mumbai – The Nariman Point. =) =) The place which symbolizes peace and love. Nariman Point showcases the beauty of the nature with the sea face, the sunrise and the setting sun. Located on the shores of Arabian Sea, Nariman Point has been an important and one of the most amazing tourist spot of Mumbai.

Nariman Point is situated in South of Mumbai. It is one of the significant business centres of Mumbai which hosts the HQ of some premier business establishments like Central Bank, The Trident, Air India, National Aviation Company, Bank of India and many more.

Lets go through some of the facts and figures related to Nariman Point.
Nariman Point was a part of Arabian Sea till 1940. During that time, a Parsi congress leader named Khursheed Framji Nariman / Veer Nariman, who was then the corporator of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) proposed to develop a business district by claiming the land from the sea.

Built in the late 1940s, the entire cost of the process of claiming the land from the sea was just Rs.300,000/- =)  Again, further reclaiming of land was done in 1970s and this time the prices of the land spurted. The rents & rates began to scale new highs every day then. In 1995, the commercial rental space hit the world record $175 per square foot. Again, a new world record was set when a house at Marine drive (part of Nariman Point) was sold for a whopping $8.62 million on 26th November, 2007 approximately at $2450 per square foot. (Rs.98000 per sq ft)

Many of my friends are employed in the offices located at Nariman Point =) Nariman Point hosts many domestic and international financial services companies like stock brokers, banks, NBFCs. Vidhan Bhavan – the political headquarters of Maharastra is also located here. :-)

The best time to visit this place is all round the year =) but Nariman Point is a Heaven on Earth in the monsoons. So June-July-August is the best time to be here. Walking on the shores, in the rain, listening to some music with an earphone plugged into your ears is what you will never like to miss. :) right ? =) =) Some of my pics when I was there during the last monsoons =)

If you love cars and if you are crazy about the brands like Chevrolets, Ferraris, Bentleys and Aston Martins, then be here at evening 5:00. Sit near Air India building and watch these branded cars racing like mad machines =) You can also spot a few Vintage cars too. Nariman Point looks amazing in twilight hours. The lamps, street lights, The lights of Wankhade Stadium :P ;-) and all the other stuff makes NP an amazing place to be at.

I mean to say that you can spend whole of your day at Nariman Point. :P The best way to get there is of course by The Mumbai Local !!! If you are on Central Line, get down at Dadar, divert to the western railway platform and board a train towards Churchgate. Get down at Churchgate, come out of the station from the left side exit door and from there its just a 5 mins walk towards the sea face =) The other way of CR commuters is.. get down at VT / CST & hire a cab. It takes about 15 mins to reach NP from VT station. The cab will cost you about 30-40 bucks.

Kuch khaneka rahega toh ShivSagar Restaurant janeka..=)) aur kuch nahi  khane rahega toh seedha vapas ghar janeka :P :P For more information about Nariman Point, you can mail me anytime, anyday at bijoy.momaya@gmail.com

So common Mumbaikars… get out of your houses and reach this place this weekend. Wishing you all the most amazing and awesome monsoon at Nariman Point. =)

Rahul Gandhi ka kaala chittha :-)

Well, i'm writing this to prove that  i'm not supporting Congress or Indian Youth Congress. When i wrote about BabaRamdev lately, few of my readers thought that i'm against Baba Ramdev and i'm supporting Congress. I have nothing to do with these politicians and any Governments. Its just that i love to expose and bring the truth on my blog.

So this time i'm exposing Congress !! Before reading, please understand that, be it Congress or BJP or any other party or the groups like UPA or NDA, everyone is equally corrupted. Paisa sab ne banaya hai.

Anyways.. as said that i'm exposing Congress, it does not mean that now i'm supporting BJP or RSS or Ramdev Baba. i have already said it 100 times that i'm not supporting anyone. Yeah, i'm a fan of Indian Youth Congress but before that i'm an Indian. Now you will be surprised to hear that i'm exposing none other than Rahul Gandhi :( He has been and will be in my list of Inspirational People on my facebook. Sorry Rahul :-(

Anyways, here we go :-)

Lets see what Rahul was in his near past. Rahul Gandhi's real name is Raul Vinci. He is son of Sonia Gandhi who is known as mother of all scams. It is believed and proved by many people that these Gandhi's have minted lots of money in the scams which India is currently suffering from. It is also believed that Rahul has a swiss bank account.. you know for what.. Statistically, Sonia & Rahul have minted 60% of the money proceeds of 2G scams. I can't really prove this but its the fact know by many by now. Kalmadi, Raja, Kanimozhi, and many other corporates who are convicted in various scams are the soldiers of Sonia & Rahul who keep their bit of share and forward the proceeds to Sonia & Rahul. :-)

I was also surprised to understand from my research work that Rahul was most benefited from the 70000 Crores of Farmers Loan wavier. The money has not reached farmers and you can understand where it has reached. These are only some of the scams that have helped Rahul to mint good money lately from 2005, till present.

Lets look back in the past now. In 2001, Rahul was arrested by FBI at Boston Airport. He was held by FBI with $150000 of unexplained money. Poor guy, he was so foolish to carry the money so openly. He under estimated the Airport security systems big time.

It is also interesting to note that Vajpayee helped him to uncluth from the FBI coz Vajpayee was the Prime Minister of India then. So, with the help of Vajpayee, Rahul was freed after the security group filed the FIR against Rahul in US. No one knows what happened to that FIR afterwards. :-)

Another interesting point to be noted. He was caught at Boston Airport with his then girlfriend Veronique Cartelli who is daughter of a Drug Mafia :-) LOL ke upar LOL :P now you know where did the $150000 come from.

Cannot complain more about Rahul. Right from his childhood, he has learned what he saw. Sonia - The mother of Corruption has been successful in teaching and preaching corruption to the future generation. So we can say that Rahul has done nothing but joined his own family business. ;-) LOL ! As i have said earlier that the show must go on. The legacy must continue and so the corruption will go on.

I have alot to write about this issue still. But i just wanted to prove that i'm not supporting Rahul Gandhi or Congress or even Indian Youth Congress. Yeah, i'm a fan of Indian Youth Congress and i'm expecting that the things will improve soon and India will prosper in the right direction.

Not only Rahul or Congress are corrupted. Even BJP is equally corrupted. I do not wish to spill the beans about all the parties here on my blog. I'm not an activist or any politician to play such war of words. I'm just another Indian who wish to see my India Prosper. Rahul will be in my list of Inspirational People. We also need to understand the fact that every saint has a past and every criminal has a future.

The facts i disclosed about him are nothing if compared with some of the facts i know about high profile BJP leaders. Remember, everyone has minted money. Even Baba Ramdev has minted money in some way or the other which will soon be disclosed by the news channels.

Remember friends. Corruption is like diabetes. It can only be controlled, not eliminated. And its we who can control the corruption. Don't expect anything from the politicians or Ramdev Baba. Stop being foolish. Please be a responsible citizen. Be true and corruption will easily be controlled.

Thank You. :-)

btw, i love opening Governments :P

Salaried Persons may get exemption from filing of Income Tax Returns.

Hi All :-)

I have a good news for all my Indian Readers. :-)

If you are a salaried person and if you earn less than or equal to 500,000 per annum only in form of salary, then you are may not file the Income Tax Returns from the Assessment Year 2011-12.

But if you earn other incomes like, Income from House Property, Income from Business / Profession & Capital Gains, then you have to continue filing the Income Tax Returns. However, if the company where you are employed deducts tax at source (TDS), then, to claim the refund you have to file the Income Tax Returns.

Another condition for being eligible for exemption of filing IT Returns is, the employee has to disclose his Sources of Income that fall under the head "Income from other Sources" like Interest Income, Divident Income, in "Form 16" to his employer. This "Form 16" will be treated as the Income Tax Return.

The reason why Central Board of Direct Taxes - CBDT allows the Salaried Assesses not to file IT Returns is the duplication of work i.e. the information in "Form 16" was same as the details of income in the Income Tax Returns filed.

However, the CBDT is yet to issue an official notification regarding the same and they are yet to officially classify the "Class of Assesses" that would be eligible to get exemption from filing IT Returns.

The Truth of Ramlila Protests !

Hello Readers,

Its been sad what happened last night. Many innocent people have feared serious injuries. But please take note that media has again showed a very wrong picture of what happened yesterday night. Everyone feels that Delhi Police has been very cruel to the people staging protests and supporting Baba Ramdev at Ramlila Ground in Delhi. Just read the below article by Tehelka which will make you re-think what really happened. Here we go.

UPDATE: Reacting to Baba Ramdev’s charges of police excesses on his supporters on Saturday night, Dharmendra Kumar, Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), has said that the police did not cane-charge at the Ramlila Maidan. He said that the police went to request Ramdev to wind up the camp, as he had no permission for a gathering of that size. He said that at that point Ramdev jumped into the crowd and asked the women supporters to encircle him by making a a protective ring around him. He said that bricks had been stored near the stage and Ramdev’s followers started hurling them at the police, in which some people received head and cervical injuries. Some time after Ramdev jumped from the stage, the police claimed that they saw him trying to escape in women’s clothes and arrested him and escorted him to a guest house near the airport. From where he was put on a special flight to Dehradun. He was then taken in a car to Haridwar. The police have registered a case of rioting against Ramdev.

Tehelka was the first media network to get to LNJP hospital at a time when the government was alleging that no serious injuries were reported. The reporter - Revati Laul was speaking to the injured when the Chief Medical officer of the hospital asked her to leave, despite the fact that the injured wanted to give testimonials of the police brutality they faced. Tehelka photographer Naveesh Tejpal was not allowed into the hospital building with his camera. Therefore the correspondent Revati Laul had to take these pictures on her mobile phone. They serve as evidence of police brutality on June 4th, 2011. One woman - Rajbala is critically injured with multiple fractures to her spine and all four limbs paralysed; two others have serious head injuries. Over 60 of those injured are at LNJP hospital.

Kunal Majumder of Tehelka on Twitter (@kunalmajumder):
Delhi Police says, "Only eight tear gas shells were fired after Ramdev's supporters threw stones at police. No lathi charge at all. Ramdev used women to make a cordon around him to escape from police. There were specific intelligence inputs that Ramdev and another leader had threats to their lives."

This is what really happened. The Delhi Police REQUESTED BabaRamdev to wind up the protests. Do you think it was fair on part of BabaRamdev to hide inbetween women to escape from and create & show a wrong picture to the world. Now you tell me who is responsible for the injuries to the women that led her to end up with peralyses. Is it BabaRamdev who was hiding inbetween the women and was trying to escape by hiding in women's clothes ? ( isn't it cheap ? ) or the protestors who threw stones and bricks at the Delhi Police ? or, was the women paralysed by the teargas fired by Police Force ??

Forget the above note. Even its a media baised note and it may be wrong too. Just consider the following facts.

Who is responsible to look after the Law and Order in Delhi ? Wasn't it fair enough that The Delhi Police requested BabaRamdev to wind up the protest as he did not have permission of the size of protest that he staged.. Delhi Police had sufficient inputs that BabaRamdev's life was under threat ! who was responsible if something would have happened to BabaRamdev ? Remember... Baba Ramdev was escorted by the high police officials and was taken to the other place in a Plane ! And then he was taken in a car unlike any other arrested man who is taken in a Police Jeep !!

Just think about the police forces. What should they do when someone throws stones and bricks at them like dogs ? Aren't they human beings ? Do they not have their families ? Saala ek toh chillar pagar khao aur uparse maar bhi khaao. Why did the protestors threw stones and bricks at the police who just REQUESTED BabaRamdev to end the protest because he did not have permissions..

Also take note that babaRamdev was enjoying the protests in Air Conditioned pendal and was collecting donations in name of the protest. Was it a protest or a 5 star party ? I'm yet to check if few of the protestors were hired !! Yes, i really feel so after the political turn this case has taken.

What would have happened if some terrorists had plotted and planted a bomb at Ramlila ? Even then the Delhi Police would have been held responsible. BabaRamdev has no rights to risk the lives of the innocent citizens. Thats the reason why Delhi Police had to take some serious steps so that no innocent lives are risked.

Fasting has been the foolish trend now a days after Sir Anna Hazare's episode. Fasting is used as a weapon in a very wrong way which is nothing but proving to be a curse to humanity. I have also come across some cases where people have started fasting for silly reasons. If this goes on for 2 more years then m sure that Food Inflation will fall down drastically :P LOL !

Please do not believe and act on what media shows. Almost everything they show is edited to suit their taste. They are paid to do that !! They create a wrong impact on the viewers mind in a big way.

I'm not asking my readers to go against BabaRamdev or to support him. Do whatever you feel is right. Be a responsible citizen. The World is watching us. I do not intend to hurt the sentiments of anyone. I'm not against anyone but i'm not with BabaRamdev. I'm not supporting him against corruption because he is fighting in a wrong way by risking many innocent lives. Remember ! you have to support the fight against corruption and not the BabaRamdev.

If u want to see a corruption free state then stop paying even the smallest bribes. You need to be in the system if you want to change the system. Fasting & staging protests is not a way to fight against corruption. Stop bribing to the traffic police, income tax officer, Provident fund officer and many other govt officials. This is the way YOU can fight against corruption.

Concluding herewith with a request to everyone. Be a responsible citizen. The younger generation is watching you. The world is watching you.

Thankyou.
